Have you written your Author Page and Dedication yet?
Author Page and Dedication
You’ve finished writing your book, draining all the creativity out of you. Now, you must write the front and back matter. How do you write about yourself in the author page? Who do you dedicate this book to? Let’s spark some ideas to revitalize your brain so that you can make the most out of these important pieces!
Typically, the author page contains a blurb about you and a picture. The picture has to be of you (obviously), and don’t be afraid to have fun with it! Smile brightly, bring in your dog, cat, children, pet fish, or whatever else makes you happy. This is a chance to show your readers the personal side of you. They already know how great of a writer you are, but do they know your heart?
In the blurb, it’s important to include your name and where you’re from. You have to start with the basics before you dazzle the reader with all the other great things about you. Then, you’ll want to include your accomplishments in education and awards. Show that you work hard, people like you, and that your talent knows no bounds. This part gives you the most credibility as a writer. After that, you’ll want to dial into the most personal sides of yourself. What do you like to do besides writing? What adventures have you been on lately?
Take the time to show your readers a special part of yourself. It may be hard to get creative and talk about yourself at this point, but your readers should be able to learn about you in a few sentences after they’ve experienced your magical piece of work.
Do you need a dedication? Only if you want to. A dedication is a quick thank you in the beginning pages to those who inspired you or helped you create your book.
I have one published book, and the dedication is: For the ones who fight to be heard with no voice loud enough to scream.
That is a shoutout to a group, an entity, which relates to the themes of the entire novel. Your dedication can be as witty, serious, or simple as you want it to be. Dedicate it to someone you love with a simple name or take it to the next level and include a sweet message for them.
I’ve heard some authors like to dedicate the book to themselves, because why not? You’ve put your heart and soul into the piece and you should be proud of the work you’ve brought forth.
Whoever or whatever you dedicate your book to is your choice. Make it meaningful, but don’t forget to have fun.
