This is the SEVENTH story from my novel Strength From Within Behind Closed Doors.
Behind Closed Doors
“It’s lovely,” I grinned and sat adjacent to Jeremy. “Stating the obvious here, but I noticed you’re wearing very vibrant colours…”
Before I could finish my thought, Jeremy screeched. “You had to bring that up, didn’t you!?” He buried his face in his hands and released a pitiful sigh.
Sparky dramatically stood up, and with his most serious facial expression yet, stared off into the distance. “Yes!” he exclaimed triumphantly, “My colours are vibrant indeed, to distract the alien robots from my identity.” Pointing down to the courtyard where I saw my old friends talking and laughing, he continued, “Those aliens down there, and all the others in the school, have trapped us in a belief that this is where we belong. They attempt to stop my mission that I have been sent to this place to complete!”
“What’s your mission?” I asked, surprisingly interested in this intense human too smart for his own good.
“Dear, God!” Jeremy exclaimed. “Don’t ask about the mission!” he warned as he slapped his hand to his forehead.
“Silence, foolish mortal!” Sparky glared at Jeremy for a moment, and then faced the sky with the same serious expression. “My mission is to round up the humans of this wretched world and free them from the grasp of the ugly robot aliens. I saved Jeremy and now I’ve found you. I will save you, Evelyn.” After he finished speaking he sat down as if nothing had happened and continued drumming violently upon his leg.
“Well, now you’ve met Sparky…” Jeremy sighed. “So, are you going to make this your new hang out spot or did Mission Impossible scare you away?”
“Does he really think there’s aliens here?” I whispered to Jeremy.
“Nah,” he chuckled, “It’s just his way of coping with high school.”
