Are you a fan of collaboration?
I enjoy working on my own, as that gives me the control over every step of the process. I also love working with my creative friends to build something incredible. Currently, I’m working on a poetry book with Jennifer LeBlanc and though it’s been a lot of work, she’s the best person to take this journey with because of her experience and level of creativity.
You may have reservations about working with other writers, thinking that if you team up with someone that means your skills alone aren’t good enough. That’s not the case at all. Here are some reasons why being part of a team could be the best thing for your writing career.
Creating New Ideas
When you’re planning with other writers, it can help improve your flow of ideas. Two brains are always better than one, because writing is never a secluded activity. Even when you’re writing a book by yourself, you still need editors and beta readers. It’s important to get second opinions to create a more well-rounded story. When you listen to someone else sharing their ideas, fresh ideas will pop into your mind too.
Having Fun with a Friend
Why wouldn’t you want to write a best-selling novel with your writer friends? It’s a fun experience to create a shared piece of work. When you work with a friend, there may be arguments, but at the end of the day you trust each other and you know that it will be a roller coaster of an experience.
Exploring a New Genre
If you’re looking to get into a new genre, or explore it for fun, you have to consult the experts! Dip your toes in and partner with the best people you know in a genre you’re unfamiliar with. Let them guide you and teach you the ways of their genre, and you can do the same for them. Why tackle it on your own when you can have someone by your side?
Learning in Collaboration
Whether a writer is a novice or an expert, there’s always something new we can learn. Understand how different writers plot out their stories and create characters. Learn new ways to describe scenery and pick up tips for beating writer’s block. Become part of a community and work with as many writers as you can. Each writer will have an inspiring tidbit to offer that you haven’t thought of before.
Getting a New Perspective
Each writer’s mind is different. When you work with someone else, try to understand their vision. Realize that there are countless ways to write a novel, and you may want to challenge yourself with something you’ve never tried before. See your characters in a new light and be open to new approaches.
Practicing New Skills
Working with another writer is a challenge in itself, especially if your personalities clash. You have to remember to focus on the positive and take something good out of the experience. Remember what you learned and apply your new collaboration and writing skills to other aspects of your life. Know that your way of writing is not the only way, and you might benefit from bringing those skills to your novels when you’re not collaborating.
Each writer has something special to bring to the table, so take the time to get to know them. Create new skills and ideas and be open to any challenge!
