Enjoy this third story sample of Curious from my book Strength From Within.
We climbed on top of the wooden railing and sat there. I guess we were playing chicken to see who would jump first. I kept thinking about the girl. “Have you seen the new girl around?” I blurted out.
“The weird one with black hair and tattoo on her shoulder?” Hank chuckled in his squeaky little way.
When he said this, a sharp pain hit my chest like he had offended me. “She’s not weird. Have you even talked to her?”
“Why would I want to? I’ve only ever seen her a couple times around town.”
“She’s new. What if she doesn’t have any friends?”
“Since when did you care about making new people feel welcome.” He climbed back over the railing to get the inhaler from his backpack. After a long puff, he said, “Do you remember when Patrice Gerber moved here two years ago? Those braces and huge mole on her cheek weren’t appealing in the least.” Hank settled back into his spot beside me.
“I was a kid! I didn’t know then what I know now. I’m a man. I’ve matured.”
“Whatever, dude.” Hank looked at me, then the water. He let out a big YAHOOOOO and cannon-balled into the ocean.
I didn’t follow him. I thought about her. I’d never seen her aside from the diner and her jogs. I wondered what she did with the rest of her day. Out of nowhere, a rush of courage shot through me. Without thinking, I hurled myself off the edge and landed feet first in the water. I decided the next time I saw her I would start talking!
