Hello everyone, let’s go on a fantastical adventure in For the Kingdom!
Today, on my journey through genres, I’m choosing to write… FANTASY
For the Kingdom
Sir Reginald galloped across an open field on his majestic horse. In full armor, they soared across the plains away from the towering castle in the distance. He weaved through the forest, leaped over the lazy river, then lunged towards the mouth of the darkest cave in the kingdom.
Dismounting his horse, he tied the reins to a tree and entered the cave. He could hear water dripping from the roof and the heavy breathing of a monster. Gripping the hilt of his sword, he crept further into blackness. A chill made the hairs on his neck stand, and then he saw it. The beast that he hit with his arrow. The one that fled the moment it was struck.
Placing his hand on its scaly nose, his heart pounded. The scales shimmered green and were sharp at the tips. It was curled in a ball with its large tail wrapped around itself. Its entire body moved as it breathed.
He remembered the glowing yellow eyes and the fierce fire that could cause unimaginable pain with a single spark.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly, stroking its snout, “I never meant to hurt you. I had to protect the King.” He took off his helmet and launched into against the wall in anger, then took off every piece of armor until he was dressed in only his black tunic. He stomped on his armor and shouted curse words, hearing his voice echo back at him. The dragon did not stir.
“Wake for me!” he shouted, collapsing to his knees. He hugged the end of the tail and shook it gently. “You are the truest friend I’ve ever had. I remember journeying through this forest as a boy. When you came to me, I thought it was a dream. I didn’t know you were feared in the nation, but I kept our friendship a secret anyway. Didn’t know I would grow to be trained as a knight who slayed dragons. I had to follow orders, but didn’t shoot in the hopes of killing you. I wanted to miss!”
He buried his face in his hands and sobbed.
Suddenly, he noticed he couldn’t hear the dragon’s breath shooting from its nostrils. The ground shook as the dragon rose from its slumber and opened its glowing eyes. With one gigantic roar, the dragon broke through the top of the cave. Sir Reginald begged for mercy as the dragon formed a fireball deep within its throat. The light of the growing fire nearly blinding. It roared again, sending the flames blasting towards him.
He screamed as he covered his face, with the lasting image of the towering dragon above him. His ashes blew away in the wind, and the dragon looked at the blood dripping from its large wing. It tried to form fire again, but it was too weak, collasping on the cave, sending more rumble crumbling to the ground. It took one deep breath before seeing the image of Sir Reginald as a boy.
As the last bit of life was zapped away from the dragon, it released its sharp claws and tore at its own chest.
The roar could be heard for miles as it tore out its heart. Just then, a brigade of dragons soared across the sky towards the castle, roaring and flapping their massive wings. They had to avenge their own, even if it meant burning every last kingdom to the ground.
