Are you prepared for another musical story in Give Me to the Mountain?
Today’s story will be inspired by the song Higher by The Ready Set.
Give Me to the Mountain
The tear in my glove widened. I tightened my grip around the rocks. I had never reached Higher than this point before. My nerves always buckled my knees and made my hands clammy at the sight of the steep incline. The pointed top of the mountain pierced the sky.
If I kept going up, I’d be dangling like a monkey clinging to a tree branch. How long had I trained for this moment and it would all end right here? I inhaled the brisk air and the smell of hard dirt.
My foot shifted, sending bits of sediment tumbling down the rock face. I screamed, “Mama!” and was transported back to my childhood at the indoor climbing facility.
Children howled with laughter, running from their parents or instructors.
The zip of the rope lines, the chiming arcade games. I would trade all of those beautiful memories with my single mother just to say that I reached the top of this mountain.
My mind told me to retreat. To forget this wild dream. An eagle soared below me, squawking, as if to taunt me. Was I going to fall?
I raised my foot to a taller foothold in the rock. I propelled myself up to reach the next one with my hand. My whole body cramped and I returned to my original position.
Sweat covered my body. My hands trembled. I lunged to grab the rock again but my hand slipped. Again. Failed. Again. Again…
Aha! Success! I’ve reached a higher point. My breathing quickened and my heart pounded. Adrenaline exploded through me.
Looking at my feet, then the blood dripping from my hand, my stomach sank. I must return to the ground. More training is needed if I’m going to reach the top. I still count this as a victory.
