When you’re struggling for peace, follow these happy place steps.
Find Your Happy Place
Sometimes you just need somewhere to relax. How do you find it? Read on!
Step One: Find a Room
Find somewhere that’s quiet, or where you can easily focus. You may not always be able to go to the beach or somewhere you feel happy in person. Imagination is the next best thing.
Step Two: Be Comfortable
Lie down, or sit up. Sit in a position that’s the most comfortable for you.
Step Three: Shake Out Your Muscles
Let yourself be loose and relax your muscles. The next step can also help with this.
Step Four: Breathe Deeply
Focus on breathing and letting your muscles relax. Take your time and check in with your whole body. Which areas feel the most tense?
Step Five: Clear Your Mind
The only thing you should be thinking about is breathing in and out in a steady rhythm. If any stressful thoughts get in, zap them away! They don’t belong here.
Step Six: Build Your Happy Place with Scenery (Smell)
This is the first step to building your happy place. Don’t rush this process and have some fun with it. Think about where you want to go and what it would smell like. Are you smelling sunscreen on the beach? Hot dogs on the grill? Focus on one smell so you don’t overwhelm yourself.
Step Seven: Build Your Happy Place with Scenery (Touch)
Think about where you want to be and what you could be feeling when you’re in your happy place environment. Is it warm sand? The grooves of a beach chair? The feeling of book pages? Pick one thing and pretend you’re holding it.
Step Eight: Build Your Happy Place with Scenery (Sound)
What’s the most common sound in your happy place? A gentle breeze? Crashing waves? Rustling leaves? Wind chimes? Choose one thing to listen to and hone in on it while keeping your nose alert and holding onto that special item.
Step Nine: Build Your Happy Place with Scenery (Taste)
Is there anything you can taste in your environment? If not, that’s totally fine. You could skip any of the senses if they don’t work in your safe space. So, is there anything to taste? A cold beverage? A sweet treat?
Step Ten: Build Your Happy Place with Scenery (Sight)
Finally, let yourself be completely engulfed by your happy place. What do you see? What colours are there? Do you see trees? Houses? Animals? Bring all your senses together and indulge in the beautiful environment.
Keep running through these steps until you’re fully relaxed and ready to get back to your day. Never rush, because that will only make things worse. If you try it, I hope this helps you calm down and recharge.
