How The Bug Impacted My Life: COVID-19
So far the impact has been minimal. Groceries and supplies have been (so far) fairly normal to get. I get my goods delivered from a store, same place I’ve dealt with for many years, so I am a well-known customer. That has been a big help (loyalty begets loyalty).
We are still working at our office for now. Practicing the whole social distancing regime and those that deal in person with others follow the recommended safety procedures. Will that change? Maybe, I don’t know for sure. I know in places like New York similar companies have been allowed to stay open as they are classified as essential services. If we get to that point here, will we be doing that? I do know that if required I can work fully at home if need be.
Financially, I should be okay for a short time even if we shut down and I have to go on EI for a while. It’s not like I will be going anywhere anyways. If it’s not too long, if it comes to that, I should still be okay.
For me right now, the hardest part has been about my father. He is in his late 80’s now, and in a care facility here in the Langley area. It has been a rough last 12 months for him. First he fell and broke his hip. Within a few weeks of getting home from that he had a massive stroke which he came close to dying. He was in the ICU at Vancouver General for a while before finally being allowed to go to a facility as my mother, who is in good shape but herself in her 80’s and unable to care for him, decided it was the best choice. Dad was and still is suffering from paralysis of one arm and some of one leg as well.
And to top it all off, he had a rapid onset of dementia and is constantly having difficulties in knowing what is real and what isn’t. It has been difficult to visit him at times as you can’t really hold a conversation with him most times, but he always seemed to take some comfort even if he didn’t seem to know what was going on around him.
The Bug’s Infection
We did have a phone set up in his room, but there were issues with him calling people and places (ie 911) for reasons and so we had to limit the phone capabilities. Then the bug hit, and now we can’t visit him, for good reasons… not upset about that, but myself and other members of my family keep calling him and he doesn’t answer. We don’t know why (volume?) but we understand the calls show up on call display (33 missed calls as of the other day) but he isn’t, or can’t answer them.
And.. I guess he is getting to be a bit… difficult… to handle right now as well, and like many care providers right now other issues are taking priority. So far there doesn’t seem to be any ongoing virus issues at his care facility and they are working hard to keep it that way.
If something does happen, he is quite elderly even without the bug going around, that anything could happen any day. And I would lament not being able to at least talk to him one more time, even if he doesn’t remember it.
