Are you reading books from L Becker?
Welcome to my interview with L Becker! Let’s see what she has to say about her books and writing journey.
Hi L. Becker! Please introduce yourself and share 5 fun facts.
Hi! My name is L Becker. I’m a California writer of Urban Romantic Fantasy. Here are five fun facts about me: I own two businesses. I am double-jointed. I love horses. I’m an eclectic pagan, and a Reiki Master.
How did you begin your writing journey?
I’ve always loved stories and books. It was first inspired by my parents who were avid readers and read to us nightly. At seven I wrote my first story through dictation to my mother. It wasn’t something I really thought about, it was something I’ve always done. When I was fifteen and wrote my first full length novel, I decided to be a writer. Writing has always just been a part of who I am.
What are you favourite genres to write in and why?
I’m definitely partial to any story with a paranormal or fantasy turn. I’m always fascinated by the unknown. By the magical and the ‘what if’.
What can you tell us about your book Angel’s Gate?
Angel’s Gate is the first book of my ShadowGate series. It introduces A.G. Morris to the Celestial world. A world she only thought of as fantasy. The delusional ravings of her religiously zealous mother. She has built a normal life for herself, a life far from her mother and her mother’s surreal beliefs. A normal life shattered at her mother’s unexpected death.
Returning home, she is pulled into her mother’s world. Discovering everything is real. Angels and demons exist and they are after her soul. The father she has never known is set on turning her to darkness. On using her to open heaven to war. Standing against him she is joined by the Guardian Angel Gideon and Mordecai, a brutal warrior angel from the Verge where a battle between angels and demons has raged for centuries. Together they must defend the realms from the Darkness.
What can you share about the ShadowGate series?
The ShadowGate series delves into the Celestial world, the fall from grace and the battle between the Dark and the Light. AG Morris is the last human Key, the last mortal that joins heaven and earth. Chiefly inspired a mixture of Judeo-Christian, Islamic, Kabbalistic and Pagan mythos regarding angels, demons, heaven and deity concepts. It all started with the Fall, when Lucifer rebelled and fell from Grace. Heaven was ripped apart by war, angel against angel until Lucifer and his followers were cast out of Heaven, banished to Earth.
The path to Heaven was sealed to them, closed behind a barrier called the Gate. The Gate was sealed with a Key and placed inside a mortal vessel, carried by a sacred human bloodline. Hidden in the hearts of mortal men and women, hidden from the DownCast and defended by the Guardian Angels. Desperate to return to Heaven the DownCast search endlessly for a way to possess the Key, for a way back home. The Darkness embodied by the Master strives to gain control of the Key to unlock the realms and wage a final war against God Himself.
How do you put your unique spin on the creatures and characters you write?
I pull from years of study in religious myth and folklore to develop the world. To create the characters I try to get into them, to discover their true motivations as individuals and not just vehicles to push the narrative forward. Character development must come first.
Out of paranormal, urban fantasy, and romance themes, which ones do you enjoy writing about the most?
Definitely the Urban Fantasy since it allows the manipulation of reality. It allows the full exploration of the unknown.
What is the most challenging part of your writing journey?
Struggling with my bi-polar. Anxiety and stress, self doubt can suck the momentum and energy from my goal. I always write. Making myself write when I’m depressed or overwhelmed is hard. Once I lose momentum it’s that much harder to go again.
What has been your greatest victory in writing?
The creation of my ShadowGate series. I’ve been writing over 30 years, but I knew this was a whole new level up when it began to take shape in 2016. It was like discovering something that had already existed inside of me. Everything was there and just fell into place.
What was the publishing process like for you?
I’ve had mixed experiences with writing. At nineteen, my 3rd novel published on the first try. However that was a one off. Since then I took a few years off from trying to publish and have just recently begun submitting. However, I will not be going the traditional route with my ShadowGate series. As I have a very specific vision with this series I will be going the self-publishing route. The rest of my work, such as my last novel, Pelican Cove, I will continue pursuing traditional publication.
What advice can you give to aspiring authors?
Read everything and most of all write everyday. Make a habit to write every single day. The only way to get good is to put the work in. Don’t be discouraged. Just keep writing.
What goals do you have for your future in writing?
I’m currently working on book 4 of my ShadowGate series, with the first one now available online. My goal is to finish and publish the whole series, while continuing to work on other stories that are unrelated to this project. I will be seeking traditional publication for Pelican Cove, Confess and other stand alone books that I have completed.
How do you relate to the characters you create?
I try to get to know each one on a personal level. I do not base them on myself but I try to empathize on what they are going through. Getting into their head and feeling what they do, whether they are protagonist or antagonist is very important. You have to find empathy whether or not you’d get along in the real world. Most importantly I try to write them as human, with all the flaws that comes with that.
Are there any last thoughts you would like to share about you and your books?
Writing is a part of me and no matter what lies ahead, I will never stop writing.
