Where will Nikki and Flora’s adventure start? Read on in Life Begins Here – Part Two.
“What kind of adventure?”
“One that involves finding your brother.”
Life Begins Here – Part Two
Flora sat next to me on the clacking train. In the seats facing us were an old man and a little boy, who kept putting his sticky lollipop fingers on the window. I cringed, urging my babysitter instincts to not kick in.
“I can see steam in your ears,” Flora whispered, “Just because your mother wants you to watch over half of our neighbourhood, that doesn’t mean it needs to extend everywhere you go. Focus on our mission. Where did you tell your mom you were going?”
“With you to a concert in the city. She knows your dad lives out there, so she assumed we’d be staying there and I didn’t correct her.”
“Fantastic!” Flora rubbed her hands together. “We’ll have the entire weekend to search.”
As we walked to my brother’s girlfriend’s apartment, I thought about the letter he left me. How he said he’d come back soon and get me out of that crummy town when he could. He abandoned me. Just like our dad did. The only difference was that Dad came back.
Maybe he didn’t want to come back or ever be found. Maybe I should have left with him when I had the chance.
Flora knocked three times, but there was no answer. We waited a few minutes, then I knocked again.
Vanessa opened the door rubbing her eyes and wearing a baggy grey t-shirt and sweatpants. “I’ve got a show tonight. Could you keep it down?” Her eyes widened when she saw me. “Nikki, oh God, what are you doing here?”
“I’m looking for my brother. He hasn’t sent me a letter in three months. You must know where he is?” My voice wavered near the end of my sentence, as I didn’t want to sound too harsh.
“Nikki, I’m so sorry. I haven’t seen him in over a year.”
