Are you ready for another musical story: Not Who We Used to Be?
This story was inspired by Miley Cyrus’ song Slide Away!
Not Who We Used to Be
Ducking behind the tower of soup cans, I nearly tipped it over with the grocery cart. My plan failed, as he still found me, parking his cart in front of mine so I couldn’t escape.
“Audrey, it’s so nice to bump into you here!” He smiled. Like I didn’t know my mother told him I come here every Sunday morning. “I was hoping we can catch up while I’m in town. Maybe grab dinner?”
I looked to my right, hoping the answer to my escape would magically appear. “Um…well, you see. I don’t know what my schedule’s like. Work’s been so busy.” My heart pounded and my palms sweated. I wrapped my purse over my shoulder, ready to abandon my cart.
He took a few steps back and raised his hands. “I’m sorry, Audrey, I didn’t mean to frighten you by coming on so strong. I’ve just been so excited to come see you. We used to be thick as thieves.”
“Used to be,” I huffed, “Is this town just supposed to forget what you did when you went off your meds? They sell lighters here. I don’t think you ever hit this place before.”
The light in his eyes went out and he lowered his hands.
“I understand your reluctance to reconnect with me. But all that happened twenty years ago. It’s my past. I’d rather be defined by my future.”
“How profound.” I slowly turned my cart, attempting to walk away.
He placed his hand on the end of it. “Don’t you believe in giving second chances? I know your heart is bigger than mine. Always was.”
“Your second chance came and left when you took everything from my family. How am I supposed to forgive that?”
Letting go of the cart, he put more distance between us. “I promise. I’m not who I used to be.”
“Neither am I,” I walked away, but turned back to say, “I won’t let you take advantage of my kindness anymore!”
I hurried towards the checkout, but he didn’t follow me. My mom may have been fooled by his words, but I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.
