Athanasia’s Self Empowerment Journey
Welcome to this interview with a creative and beautiful young woman named Athanasia! Let’s see what she has to say about empowerment.
What words do you use to describe yourself?
Even yesterday, even today, even at the same moment that I am writing these words, I can recall all those names that several of my classmates used to call me. All those murmurs. The giggling. Names, such as ”Scarecrow”. Even tomorrow. All those voices trying to make me believe that I am what they just wanted me to be.
Fortunately, I was lucky enough to know the person I really was and the person that I really want to be. A person who who chooses empathy, who chooses love, who chooses positivity. Who chooses dreaminess, diversity. A person who chooses uniqueness. A person who reads. Who believes in kindred spirits, even a person who really does believe in fairies.
What does it mean to be confident?
Confidence, as I perceive this, is when you have faith in yourself. When you do not permit negative thoughts to tell you that you are not able to achieve all those things you would like to do. When you feel okay about who you are and you do not define your worth from what others may say about you or assume from your failures (as we all have them-they are a part of life and it is totally okay.) Confidence is to dare to be yourself.
How do you fight negative self talk?
It is not an easy thing to fight negative self talk. Not at all. But you have to keep trying to fight this. You owe it to yourself to have faith in you and in what you can achieve. Because, you can make your dreams come true. You really can. And you have to keep trying not to let that voice inside you tell you otherwise. You are a magical being, full of abilities and potentials. You have to believe this. Trust this. It is a difficult fight with one’s self, but every one of us needs to use a positive way of thinking, because we owe it to ourselves to do the things that make us happy and complete us as people.
Why do you think people fear judgement?
People tend to fear judgement, indeed. It is a part of human nature. It happens because we are afraid that we not enough. We are so afraid that people will not accept us for who we truly are or that they will not accept our choices. Afraid that we are not going to be loved no matter what. We are scared that we will be left all alone. But all these are just assumptions that we make ourselves and we need to realize this. And if someone will not accept us for who we really are, it doesn’t matter. We are/need to be enough to ourselves.
What do you consider to be healthy competitions between two people?
Healthy competition between two people is a constructive one instead of a destructive. An unhealthy competition could destroy relationships, even between siblings or friends and it is a pity to see people compete with each other in a destructive way.
How do you embrace your true self?
You embrace your true self when you permit yourself to grow and develop, when you do not feel that you have to hide who you are in reality, when you are not ashamed or afraid of other’s opinion, when you love all the things you are and all those things that make you a unique being in the dimension of time and in all the places of this galaxy.
Are you happy with how you currently treat yourself and others? Is there anything you would do to change that?
I think I always tended to treat others better that I treat myself. I don’t regret that I care about others. But I regret that I tend not to care so much about treating myself better than I actually do and I recognize that it needs to change, so I started therapy. I need to care about me and I need to treat myself with respect and love.
Helpful resources or last words on self-empowerment?
I read some time ago, the book ”Emily of New Moon” by L.M. Montogomery. A quote that I loved and it is a great time to share this is the following:
‘Remember, you’re not of much importance.’
‘I am important to myself,’ cried Emily proudly.
