Skylar’s Secret Part 1
Skylar ran her thumb along the smooth surface of the stone in her hands. It sparkled in the sunlight each time she tilted it forward. She sat cross-legged at the far end of the backyard. It connected to the forest where many of the teenaged kids in the neighbourhood liked to throw parties. Being eight-years-old, the only thing that Skylar cared about in that forest were the treasures she collected.
“Whatcha got there?” Skylar’s older brother Warren kneeled next to her and held his hand out hoping she would let him have a closer look.
Skylar hugged it to her chest. “Amy gave it to me. She said I have to take very good care of it. If it breaks, we could all be in danger.”
Warren patted Skylar’s head. “You’re still letting your friend call the shots, huh? Am I ever going to meet her?”
She shrugged away from him and stuck out her tongue. “She’s my friend, not yours.”
“We could be friends. You talk about her so much, she must be an awesome girl, just like you.”
“She’s not a girl.”
“But Amy is a girl’s name.”
“That’s not her full name. I can’t say her full name that well, so she let’s me call her Amy. How many times do I have to tell you that?”
Warren looked over at his mother standing in the doorway. Their eyes met, and his expression told her that he wouldn’t be getting any new information about her imaginary friend today. Warren kissed Skylar’s head. Normally she would wipe his gross cooties away, but her eyes were fixed on the stone.
When Warren entered the house, Skylar looked up to the tops of the trees where Amy perched with her purple, scaly wings folded into her sides. Amy swooped down, and Skylar snuggled against her leg.
“When can I show you to my brother?”
Amy turned to the house and watched Warren through the window. “When the time is right.”
