The next installment is here!
The Cage I’ve Known: Part Four
A burning pain surged through my body as my vision slowly improved. My wrists and ankles strapped to a table. The chains that I yearned for, except this time they were leather straps.
“The beast has chosen you,” Dr. Greenwich said, circling the table as he wrote on his clipboard. He snapped a rubber glove onto his hand and pressed his thumb into the gash across my stomach.
My body writhed and I squealed in anguish. “What are you doing to me?” I asked breathlessly.
“You are the next champion,” he said casually, “You will become a fighter.”
“What does that mean?”
Dr. Greenwich pulled out a needle from a drawer and tapped the edge. The room was dark except for one light bulb hanging over my head. He plunged the syringe into my wound, pushing out a warm liquid that stung worse than the beast’s claws.
I screamed until my throat was too dry to continue. Sweat poured over me and I felt like I could hear my blood pumping.
The doctor unlatched the straps and grabbed me by the throat to throw me into a cage in the corner of the room. I heard a crank turning and I was lowered into a blacker darkness.
My head spun and I couldn’t breathe. Dr. Greenwich’s voice came over the intercom. “Prove yourself to the beast, and we’ll let you live.”
A buzzing sound echoed around me and a sliver of light grew as the door rose. Suddenly, I heard a chanting crowd and incessant clapping. The low growl of the beast sounded like it was right beside me and I shivered. The cage door flung open and I was tipped out into the dirt arena. The crowd cheered louder and I squinted at the bright stadium lights.
“Let the match begin!” Dr. Greenwich’s voice echoed from a megaphone.
I stood, suddenly feeling energized like I’d been pumped with caffeine. Feeling hot breath on the back of my neck, I turned. I gasped, finally able to see the true form of the beast.
To be continued…
