The Cage I’ve Known: Part Three
“I’m not wearing that,” I snarled as the man held out the collar to me.
“You will,” he said with a smile, “My name is Dr. Greenwich and you’ve been under my protection for several years. It’s about time you return the favour.”
“Protection? Favour?” I tried to stand, but the woman pushed me back down. “I didn’t ask for any of this. How can you expect me to do something for someone that had me locked in a cage?”
“I know you’ve grown fond of the cage, so you’re hesitant to be let out,” he replied, “But I assure you that this will be worthwhile.” He clipped the collar on me and tossed me off the ledge into the ring.
I collapsed in the dirt, and stood on shaky legs. Smells of motor oil filled the air, like I was at the site of a monster truck rally.
I looked around me at the empty seats and the concrete dome above.
There was a dark hallway on either side of the arena. Echoes of screams barreled towards me, then I heard the low growl of the beast.
A blast of wind shot around me and I thought I saw something move. I was struck down and pinned by an invisible force. It moved quickly, never giving me a chance to view it. I could smell its vile stench and feel its cold, slimy skin against mine. It growled again and slashed my stomach as I tried to stand.
I cried out in excruciating pain and clutched my stomach, curling up into a ball. Looking onto the ledge, I saw the doctor and the woman staring at me with bright smiles.
“You’ve been chosen!” Dr. Greenwich said, “You are the one we’ve been looking for!”
I could barely hear him over my pounding heart. My entire body shook and my vision blurred. I felt the collar tighten around my throat. The last image I saw before passing out was a pair of glowing red eyes.
To be continued…
