Welcome to the second installment of my little mystery!
The Cage I’ve Known: Part Two
“Who are you?” I asked the woman, “What do you want from me? Why am I here? You owe me an explanation!”
The woman didn’t say a word. She was dressed in jeans and a ragged t-shirt. Her skin was pale and her eyes bloodshot. She unlocked the chains from my body, and I wanted to urge her to put them back on. I felt lost without the chains, like she’d peeled off my skin.
“Are you the one over the intercom?” I asked, “Are you Buddy? Are you the one that took me? Don’t you speak!?”
She linked her arm with mine and pulled my shaky body to stand. I dug my heels into the ground, but she dragged me into the hallway. She was freakishly strong. In the hallway, I was blinded by fluorescent lights. The floor was lined with straw, like we were in a barn. There were several rows of doors that looked just like my metal cage.
I tried to scream and squirm out of her grasp, but my energy was nonexistent.
She didn’t react to any of my words or movements. She was on a mission, dragging me down to an uncertain destiny. Finally, she dropped me at my knees in front of a door that looked like it should be attached to a garage.
She pressed four digits on a keypad, and the door rose. Behind it was a man in a white lab coat. He had dark hair, was clean-shaven, and had green eyes that could charm the pants off anyone. I stared up at him, trembling as I rested on my knees.
My bones felt like they were ablaze.
“Hello, Mara,” he said in a deep voice. My eyes widened. He was my kidnapper. He was Buddy. “I’m here to prepare you for the arena.”
As he said that, I heard a low, but echoing growl and a shrieking woman. I tried to look around him, but he stepped in my line of view. “What happens in the arena?”
He pulled a black leather collar from his coat pocket and grinned. “You fight the beast, of course.”
To be continued…
