Come enjoy a musical story, The Darkest Secret, inspired by the song These Lies – This is All Now.
The Darkest Secret
“Lies are tearing me up inside.” Holly laid flat on her stomach. Her feet kicked the headboard and her arms fell limp off the edges. “I did something bad,” she groaned, “Catastrophically horrible.”
Summer stretched out on the length of the bed, resting against the headboard and flipping through a magazine. “Will you tell me what you did already? I’m your best friend. You can tell me anything. I have your back.”
“It’s too horrible.” Her voice cracked as she rolled onto her back and rubbed her eyes. “I play the scenario in my mind repeatedly, wondering why I didn’t tell the truth. I can’t go back now, the web of lies is too much! I’ve lost control of the situation. I need to leave the country.”
“Okay, now you’re worrying me,” Summer put down her magazine. “I bet my life that if you tell the truth now, you’ll feel much better. Start by telling me, because I really don’t care what you did. I’ll love you regardless.”
Holly sat up and rested her head in Summer’s lap. Her bottom lip quivered as Summer stroked her hair. “I should have trusted my gut and not get myself into trouble. I’m in deep.”
“Out with it!” Summer pulled her blonde hair into a ponytail, which always helped her think.
“Will you sing to me first? Your voice always calms me.”
Summer glared at her.
“Fine, but once I tell you, you may not look at me the same.
“I told you I will.”
“You know that boy I have a crush on?”
“Well,” she said slowly, feeling the words about to spill out of her mouth, “I’ve been letting him cheat off me in math class, and when Mr. Goodwin asked about it, I told him I didn’t know anything. Why did I do that!?” Holly sobbed and hugged a pillow to her chest.
“That’s it?” Summer hit Holly with a pillow. “You’re such a nerd.” Slipping off the bed, she pulled Holly to stand. “Tomorrow you’ll tell the truth, and everything will be fine, okay?”
“Okay.” Holly flung her arms into the air before sobbing into Summer’s chest, soaking her new blouse with salty tears.
