Have you seen the creative talents of Tiffany Marcum?
Welcome to my interview with Tiffany Marcum! We discuss art, music, writing, creation, and valuable advice to other creative minds.
Hi Tiffany! Please introduce yourself and share 5 fun facts!
- My spirit animal is a sloth.
- I am trying vegetarian nuggets (impressed so far!).
- I am a die hard rap and 90’s alternative rock fan.
- The last live concert I saw was Snoop Dogg in 2018 (best ever!!).
- I am a 2 time writing award winner, for essay and fiction.
How did you begin your journey as a writer?
I started creatively writing in elementary school and my favorite show was “The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross”.
How does music and art inspire your writing?
Any music that speaks truth. It can be the raps of Jay-Z about oppression to the provocative soul in Thievery Corporation. A compulsive wave comes over me and I would do a disservice to the creative world if I didn’t create after that inspiration.
What’s your favourite part about creating in any medium?
The initial genius idea, and that I can’ tell anyone about it yet. I want to blow their minds upon completion.
What’s the most challenging part about creating?
Creating something truly original. Fighting the thoughts of, “Why bother? It’s all been done!”
What’s the best advice you can share for aspiring artists and writers?
Stay confident! Do comparisons from years past. Join online groups and seek out like minded individuals.
What’s your favourite piece you’ve ever created?
It’s a toss up between 2 high school projects from my senior art class in 2002.
In a collage, we drew topics from a hat. In the collage we had to use one drawing element and one including reversing the color wheel scheme. My topic was “WORLD”. We were given a few magazines to chop up. I used a word border and emphasized multicultural faces and diversity.
Another favorite was a Pop Art panel. We had a choice of comic strip scenes and then magnified them by a projector. Once traced, we could begin painting. Hand mixing each color.
How do you find motivation to create when you’re not feeling up to it?
Lots and lots of guilt.
What have you learned throughout your art and writing journey?
I have learned about active listening, respecting someone’s courage to express themselves, and the growth you can see from past writings. Some are totally cringe worthy!
What goals do you have for the future as an artist and writer?
Publish my Career Memoir, first and foremost! And to be successful in my pursuits.
What do you hope people will gain from the experience of viewing or reading your work?
I hope that my blog is entertaining. That my art gallery display there will lead to collaboration requests. I hope that my Career Memoir shines a light into the under-reported tales of caregivers and the challenges we face.
What advice would you give to your past self when you were just starting out?
Keep trying!! Someone will love your work!
Why do you think creativity is so important in the world? What does it mean to you?
Creativity is so needed. There is so much mass produced junk. It all looks the same. Be bold and avoid stifling your creative voice.
Any last thoughts to share about yourself and your work?
I am hoping to self publish my Career Memoir in the next year or so. You can find my work in Silly Linguistics Magazine. I blog occasionally about my collaborative projects. I am trying out making Pinterest Pins as well.
