Waiting Around – Part Four is nearing its dramatic conclusion!
Maisie reached out slowly, then withdrew. She opened her mouth to speak, then stopped.
“That’s what I thought.” I turned and walked away.
Waiting Around – Part Four
The next day at lunch, I kept my head down when I noticed Maisie walking in. I waited for her to stride to her table, but she stood by the door. Joey nudged me. “She’s waving at you,” he said, “How’d you manage that?”
I looked up and my heart stopped when I saw her sweet smile and shy wave. Taking a deep breath, I shook my head and faced away from her.
Blaring music echoed through the cafeteria. Everyone at my table covered their ears and searched for the source of the racket. The marching band stomped through the center of the room in severely slacked timing. It sounded like they were playing two different songs at full volume.
A teacher yelled at them to play softly but no one could hear a thing. Maisie ran to the front of the marching band and waved her hands in the air. The flute player at the front nearly crashed into her.
The player signaled to the others and our school pride song faded.
I cleaned out my ears with my pinkie finger and stretched my jaw to stop the ringing. Maisie took my hands and we gazed at each other. Her face burned red and her eyes darted between me and her friends.
“Was this your fault?” I said with a smile.
She giggled. “I planned it better in my head. I forgot how uncoordinated the band was. In the movies, they make it look so easy.”
“I don’t know what movies you’re watching to create this disaster.”
She dropped her arms to her sides. “I was trying to make a grand gesture. There’s so much I want to say to you, and I had to make sure you’d listen.”
“I’m deaf from the band,” I intertwined my fingers with hers, “But I’m willing to hear you out.”
To be continued…
